The signature Aramis fragrance is an all time classic and my favorite of them all. This always inspires me, its the purest expression of the classy mature and masculine man and smells sensational. I wear this with satisfaction. A staple for me and for all gentlemen.

I never liked this when I was younger. It always seemed a bit beyond my age. I guess it's more appropriate to say it intrigued me some but there was no way i could see me pulling it off in my 20's. I graduated high school in 1985, so I fully appreciated, even then a big powerful masculine fragrance. I lived on Drakkar Noir for a couple years at one point. Aramis was always one I thought I might come back to later and try again.

Finally, last year after re-kindling my fragrance collecting habit in earnest I decided I should give this a proper wearing and really see if I had "grown" into something this classic. I gave it two trial runs and and when I actually went in with the intention of buying, the store's Lauder expert girl happened to be working and after finding out just how this fragrance got its start I was really sold. It is now one of those fragrances that makes me wonder why I don't wear it more often every time I put it on.

This stuff is ridiculously good for the price. It is very much a product of its middle notes and is positively scorching. It may be too harsh and alien for some, but I can't stop smelling it. It reminds me of the inside of an old briefcase, both classy and of an ambiguous age. It opens with an intense bergamot blast over the already full-blast middle notes; gold, shimmering light. As the bergamot comes down, it gets a bit like a burnt building that has been setting for years. There's an intense firewood scent to it. The sandalwood is definitely detectable over the "man base." It stays sharply smokey as it fades, but doesn't really go away(seriously, it lasts forever).

I'm not sure how close this is to the original, but if it's been reformulated, I don't even care! This stuff is AMAZING. This stuff also tends to be REALLLLLLY cheap at discount stores (~10USD for 3.4oz), so there is no reason to pass it up.

A big, bold classic which, oddly enough, doesn't smell very strong right out of my little $3 splash bottle. At first you'd think it was just another standard 70s Monsieur Musk / Coty Musk type, but it soon proves to be woodier and spicier, with leather. The later top notes hold an intriguing contradiction: the sharpness of one of the spices stands firmly over some surprisingly strong but gentle florals underneath. This use of significant "feminine" florals in a men's wood scent reminds me of Bois du Portugal, even though BdP uses a more jasminey mix. Ultimately, Aramis becomes what I'd call a soapy floral leather scent with a moderate amount of spiced wood, the musk having mostly dissipated.

I really like the scent, and I like the firm and professional, yet honest and human, way that it comes across on the middle-aged businessmen who seem to be its most frequent users. Because my little bottle has a fairly wide mouth, however, I can't control the application with the kind of precision I'd like for such a concentrated formula. Because of this, I'm hesitant to put any on for days at the office, even with the lightest dose I can manage. I suspect I'll be giving my little bottle away soon, but some day I'll get a bottle of the aftershave to see how it stacks up strength-wise. Still, it's absolutely a must-try for anyone interested in soapy leather; the smoothness of the blending is excellent.
